Free Basic Dog Training Tips - Using Treats

We left part 1 of free basic dog training tips by mentioning there's a right way to use treats.

Here's the trick. When giving verbal correction you need to remove the treat by putting the hand holding the treat behind your back.

This way, any animal focused on the reward, only to see it disappear when they make the wrong move, will quick learn not to make that move again. At least not if they want the treat.

A variation of this technique could be used when teaching the puppy to "drop it". Only instead of removing the reward you're removing whatever it is they need to drop
• Gently rest your fingers on what you want the dog to drop. Say a rawhide chew.
• As soon as he lets go, grab the rawhide, and whip the ball behind your back.
• Give the treat, offer praise, then give the rawhide back.

If you don't remove it from sight, some eager-to-learn puppies may be tempted to grab the rawhide chew back on their own. Which is not what you want. You want them to get the idea that when they relinquish the object and DON'T go after it, they get the praise and the treat.
