You want to try to train all the time instead of just at specific times. A good way to do that is every time the puppy dog wants something use a command. So if the puppy wants out, practice the sit/stay command. While holding the door open, tell the dog to stay for several seconds. When successfully completed let him out by saying "out". Making sure you praise him for his good behavior. |
Another might be to speak before being let out. Don't be surprised if the dog will go to the door and let you know it's time to go out.
The down/stay or stand/stay might work like this. You rub his head and back and make him stay until you let him go.
Ready to hit the road with your pet? Open the door and tell him "up" - to indicate he can get into the car or truck.
You can also reward the dog with a treat to reinforce good behavior. So if you want the dog to go into his crate, promise him a treat for going in.
You probably don't want to go the food as reward trick every time. Otherwise, just as you would, the animal will come to expect it.
