How to Teach Your Dog Cool Tricks - the "Bang" Trick (con't)

We discussed the pluses and minuses of using food as reward in dog training already.

Yet if you want to use food as a reward when teaching the "Bang" trick here's one way to do it.

• Once in the down position, you very slowly move the food from in front of her nose to around behind her head. She'll naturally start to roll over to follow it.
• Reward in small steps - first for just rolling over a little way, then a little further - until she's all the way on her back.
• At that point you add the verbal cue "Bang."

Cool Trick Training Tip: When you're confident enough to bet money your dog will do as commanded each and every time, then you cue it.

Like any dog training, learning this trick is going to be a gradual process. That can be done using praise (with or without using food as a reward) one small step at a time.
