Tips for Training a Labrador Puppy
Here are seventips for training a Labrador puppy. Actually I don't know that tips for training a Labrador puppy are that much different from a collie pup, or a German Shepard. A puppy is a puppy.
|
Tip# 1: First and foremost stay positive. As with all dog training, it is best to use the positive approach in training with your Lab. That is only reward good behavior while ignoring or discouraging bad behavior. Remember dogs live for approval.
Tip #2: Some will suggest clickers are good training tools for your Labrador puppy. This way when the puppy does something good, you click and reward with a treat or toy. Soon the dog realizes that the sound of the clicker means "I get a treat, praise, or time with my favorite toy. Stick with it and the dog will associate that clicking sound with success.

Tip#3: The collar is another important training tool. If the dog is easy to handle, you can use a flat or buckle-type collar. Another kind is the head halter.
Tips for training a Labrador puppy #4: Give praise by excitedly in your "happy voice" Saying things like "Good dog!", "Good girl!", "Good boy, Rover". Also dogs hear quite well. So there's no need to yell. In fact they learn best when you speak commands or give cues firmly, yet softly. "Off" works better when the dog jumps on you than screaming "Get Off Me Gawd Damnit!"
