Training Dogs to Sit
We learned how to use a treat when training puppy to sit up. Now let's get a few more tricks of trade when using a treat. Then learn another way to go when training dogs to sit.
|
You see, training a puppy to sit up depends on the dog.
Now when training a dog to sit you may find your dogs will sit up if you put a treat over its nose.
If this doesn't work, try this.
• Tell the dog to sit and get behind him.
• Gently rest your legs against its back. Tuck in its legs.
• Say the words "Sit up" whenever you raise it up.
• When the dog seems relaxed, get it to go up with a treat.
|
Keep practicing while propping up its back. Eventually use the treat without propping up its back.
Training Dogs to Sit - Whistle Method
• With a whistle between your lips get the pup to sit down.
• The instant it's butt hits the floor, blow the whistle. You want it to associate sitting and the sound of the whistle.
• Next step is to whistle first and expect them to sit. If they respond especially fast, you might also give them a treat to reinforce the whistle.
With this technique, they may well learn that the whistle means sit before they learn the verbal cue "sit". Either way you've got two ways to go when training a dog to sit.
